Dimensional asphalt shingles are going to be stronger and more durable than 3-tab, and can last up to 30 years or longer. The main difference with these is they are arranged in 2 or 3 layers, as opposed to the single-layer 3-tab. Dimensional shingles are even more cost-effective as far as an investment goes.
